2023 ILCA 4 Worlds in Volos, Greece Part 1

A fun day out on the water for my first Worlds. Found some good points for improvement and ready to get back out there tomorrow!

If you’re interested in following along check out the great footage provided by the organisers here on YouTube (my sail number is 196888):

And go here for the results for boys and girls

I won’t be writing much during the event but here is some background:

Greece is experiencing an unusually long and extreme heatwave, now into its 3rd week. Today Tuesday 25th July is day 1 of 6 days of racing aiming for 2 races per day.

Despite the heat, the Greek hospitality is welcoming and they do all they can to help.

We are getting continual reminders, as sailors, to stay hydrated in this heat; the lowest temperature since being here has been 26 at night up to 40 during the day. It will be a challenge but we are all experiencing the same conditions.

This event has a record number of entries of over 400 boats (286 boys and 150 girls) from 50 countries. We are divided into 4 different fleets across 2 race courses. Which means there are about 75 boats on each start line. So a little more hectic than the 20-30 boats we see for big events back home. But getting experience in big fleets is a big reason to be here, what is known in the ‘biz’ as ‘fleet management’.

Opening ceremony was last night with the Australian team of 13 athletes highly visible and united. I wasn’t able to attend due to illness but Mum went on my behalf and filmed the parade for me – not like being there but sleeping last night meant I was well enough to compete today. I’ll be at the closing ceremony with my team mates for sure!
